This split is evident in most aspects of Hungarian political, social, and cultural life.

- Climate -Because of its situation within the Carpathian Basin, Hungary has a moderately dry continental climate. The mean annual temperature is about 50 °F (10 °C). Average temperatures range from the mid-20s to the low 30s F (about −4 to 0 °C) in January and from the mid-60s to the low 70s F (about 18 to 23 °C) in July. Recorded temperature extremes are 109 °F (43 °C) in summer and −29 °F (−34 °C) in winter. In the lowlands, precipitation generally ranges from 20 to 24 inches (500 to 600 mm), rising to 24 to 31 inches (600 to 800 mm) at higher elevations.
